2023 Greater Bay Area Science Forum - Carbon Neutrality Sub Forum Was Held

On May 22-23, the 2023 Greater Bay Area Science Forum - Carbon Neutrality Sub Forum, with the theme of "Science and Technology Revolution for Carbon Neutrality", was grandly held in Nansha District, Guangzhou. The forum was co sponsored by the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the People's Government of Jiangmen City, the Qinghai Tibet Plateau Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Lingshan Forum Science Center of Guangdong Province, and co organized by the Longzihu New Energy Laboratory. Zhang Suojiang, academician of the CAS Member, director of the Institute of Process Engineering, and director of the Longzihu New Energy Laboratory, was invited to attend the conference, and was recruited as a member of the new strategic advisory committee of the Great Bay Area Science Forum, and served as the chairman of the carbon neutral sub forum.

2023 Greater Bay Area Science Forum - Carbon Neutrality Sub Forum

At the opening ceremony, Zhang Suojiang emphasized that "achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality is a broad and profound economic and social systemic change", which has become a common goal of the international community and will affect every one of us. Based on this, both the energy system and the industrial system will undergo fundamental restructuring. He pointed out that achieving the "dual carbon" goal requires fundamental technological innovation and international cooperation, which is the original intention of holding this forum. I hope that through academic exchange and collision of ideas, more new revolutionary technologies can be generated in the future, further promoting greater theoretical innovation, and achieving a virtuous cycle. We also hope to achieve transformation from basic research to technological innovation, and then to systems with the joint efforts of the international community. In the future, we will continue to expand the influence of the forum and build it into an international first-class platform for interdisciplinary research, innovation, talent cultivation, and extensive cooperation.

Zhang Suojiang, Academician of the CAS Member, addressed the Opening Ceremony of the Forum

This forum has invited many well-known experts and scholars in the field of "dual carbon" at home and abroad, bringing exciting reports to everyone. We hope that through academic exchange and ideological collision, more new transformative technologies can be generated in the future, and through new technologies, greater theoretical innovation can be further promoted, achieving a virtuous cycle. I also hope that with the joint efforts of the international community, we can achieve a transformation from basic research to technological innovation, and then to systems. This transformation is undoubtedly a great challenge for technological innovation, but it is also an opportunity for young workers. In the future, we will continue to expand the influence of the forum and build it into an international first-class platform for interdisciplinary research, innovation, talent cultivation, and extensive cooperation.

Chen Yong, chairman of Guangdong Association for Science and Technology, researcher of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Guangzhou Energy Research Institute, and academician of the CAE Member, pointed out in the keynote report that as renewable energy produced in and used in rural areas, agricultural energy is a distributed multi energy coupling energy supply system, which will provide clean and low-carbon energy for agricultural production, farmers' lives, and rural transportation, and is expected to promote the rural energy revolution.

Chen Fahu, director of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an academician of the CAS Member, said in the keynote report that anthropogenic carbon emissions are the main cause of contemporary climate warming. The Qinghai Tibet Plateau is the national barrier for water resources security and ecological security, and also the only negative carbon area. High quality green development of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau can be achieved by building a carbon neutral contribution pilot comprehensive demonstration area.

Han Buxing, a researcher of the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an academician of the CAS Member, made a keynote report on green chemistry and carbon neutrality, pointing out that carbon neutrality involves multi-disciplinary fields, and the core scientific issues are material conversion and energy conversion. Chemistry and chemical industry should eventually embark on the path of green and sustainable development by developing low-carbon green revolutionary technologies, establishing high-level industrial parks, and gradually realizing intellectualization.

Researcher Chen Shaohua, Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Institute of Urban Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, made a report on the synergy of multi-source solid waste pollution reduction and carbon reduction, and introduced the specific trial cases carried out by the scientific research team in the urban agglomeration of Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area; Chief Professor Ma Longlong of Southeast University gave a report on the new strategy of biomass "carbon oxygen combination" carbon sequestration under the "dual carbon" goal; Chen Daohu, President of the Energy Development Research Institute of Longji Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd., delivered a keynote report on the innovation and cost outlook of solar photovoltaic power generation technology; Multiple foreign experts, including Sir David King, former Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK government, Honorary Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, CEO of Green Lizard Technology Limited, Chair Professor Martin Atkins at Queen's University of Belfast, Professor Arabi Keshk, President of the Delta University of Technology in Egypt, and Professor Ibrahim Abouderae from the University of Mnufia in Egypt Professor Bernd Sachweh, Vice President of BASF New Materials Co., Ltd., and others delivered keynote speeches, discussing topics and dimensions such as climate change, ecological carbon sequestration, sustainable development, and information intelligence.

This forum has also set up the Young Scientists Forum, the "the Belt and Road" Green Technology Forum and the poster display. Many scholars at home and abroad have conducted in-depth discussions on such topics as low-carbon/zero carbon energy technology innovation, industrial low-carbon transformative technologies, carbon neutral ecosystems, carbon capture, utilization and storage, climate change and sustainable development, aiming to promote the green and low-carbon scientific and technological revolution, Build a cross disciplinary and comprehensive academic exchange platform to jointly explore the key path to achieving carbon neutrality in China.
