As a high-quality precursor, mesophase asphalt can be prepared into high-performance asphalt based carbon fibers through a series of treatments such as melt spinning, pre oxidation, carbonization, and graphitization. Mesophase asphalt based carbon fiber has excellent properties such as high modulus, high strength, high temperature resistance, conductivity, and thermal conductivity. It is an indispensable engineering material in cutting-edge technology fields such as aerospace and national defense. It is a key material widely used in new energy vehicles, medical equipment, sports goods, and other fields. It is a high-tech special fiber for both military and civilian use in the country.
Our institute uses coal tar pitch as raw material and adopts a three-step heat treatment method to synthesize spinnable mesophase pitch. By regulating the ordered structure of the mesophase, the obtained mesophase pitch has a mesophase content of over 98%, moderate softening point, narrow molecular weight distribution, and can continuously spin for over 5 kilometers. High performance asphalt based carbon fibers are prepared by melt spinning of mesophase asphalt through a series of treatments such as pre oxidation, carbonization, and graphitization. They have excellent mechanical properties, tensile strength greater than 2000MPa, modulus greater than 600GPa, and thermal conductivity greater than 600W/m·K.
